Transport In The Philippines
Local Travel in the Philippines
Metered and fixed rate taxi cabs are widely available in key cities however unlike Australia and other countries, it is difficult to pre book a taxi. Car hire is available in major cities. Jeepney and busses are inexpensive ways of getting around most parts of the Philippines. Tricycles are the main form of transport when you get to the local barangays (local council areas). The one time I did get on a bus in Manila, I witnessed one of the locals have her necklace snatched from her when she disembarked. It pays to not wear expensive jewellery and watches while traveling on public transport in the Philippines. The local people would normally keep these things to wear when they are in their offices or functions but not wear them when traveling on public transport.
I will write about some of my own experiences wile travelling in the philippines soon.
My first Whale Shark Adventure at Donsol Philippines
I have always wanted to swim with the whale sharks, so on my very first trip to the Philippines while we were visiting Lhots family in Gubat we decided to take a Jeepney to Donsol and check the place out, this was 24th of August in 2006, it was an interesting trip. Especialy as you get near the coast it is quite hilly and the driver of the Jeepney was constantly pumping the breaks. (you usually do this because there is air in the break system which is not good when you have several tonnes of Jeepney and passangers going down hill).
Anyhow we got to Donsol without having a total panick attack and began to look for some whale sharks, of course in August is not the time for whale sharks although there had been some recent sightings. Well Donsol at this time of the year does not have any tourists so hence no tour operators to take us out in a boat. But we did manage to get the tricycle dirver to get us a photo with one whale shark for my first encounter with a whale shark.
So I have yet to swim with the whale sharks but I intend to do so in the near future, I will keep you posted on my plans hopefully I can make it this year.
One of my fellow bloggers Chyng Reyes has som nice photos and the story of her experience with real whale sharks in Oslo Philippines here on her blog.. Whale Shark encounters in Oslog.
I will write some more about whale sharks in the Philippines in preperation for my own real encounter.
If you have had your own experience please share it with me and my readers.
Cheers David
